Shapes

Muhammad Ali, 1966
What is an Infantryman?

Infantrymen come in all shapes, shades, weights, sizes, states of sobriety, misery, and confusion. They are sly as a fox, have the nerve of a dope addict, the sincerity of a politician, and the subtlety of Mount St. Helen. They are extremely irresistible, totally irrational, and completely indestructible. Infantrymen dislike paperwork, working weekends, answering letters, and the day before payday. You may as well give in. An Infantryman is your long distance lover. They are steely-eyed, warm-smiling, hyperactive, overreacting, curious, passionate, talented, spontaneous, physically fit, good for nothing bundles of worry… and they will always be there for you, regardless of how long its been since you last talked.

Photographer Carolyn Cole took this terrifying photo during her assignment in Liberia. It shows the devastating effects of the Liberian Civil War. Bullet casings cover entirely a street in Monrovia. The Liberian capital was the worst affected region, because it was the scene of heavy fighting between government soldiers and rebel forces.

The End Of The World

The End Of The World

The age old adage home is where the heart is finds its true meaning in Miyakejima, a small island located in southeast Japan. Despite the high level of volcanic activity that causes poisonous gas to leak from the earth that forced the 3,600 island residents to evacuate in 2000, the citizens just won’t stay away. Thus, the self-appointed gas mask town rose from the, very literal, ashes.
